The Bachelor of Design in Graphic DesignStudents interested in pursuing the Bachelor of Design Degree in Graphic Design must first gain admission to the pre-design program of the College of Arts and Architecture. Admission to the pre-design program is based upon a review of (1) the application for admission with complete academic credentials and (2) the review of a creative solution to a design problem that includes both a creative work and a written statement. The emphasis of the graphic design program is on problem solving, relevant ideas, craftsmanship, and hard work. As a consequence, an important part of the application process is the evidence of creative ability in solving practical problems in graphic communication. The solution to the design problem outlined below should display ability to effectively communicate an idea to a particular audience, capture that audience’s attention, and leave a positive and enduring impression. The review will be based on creative ability, evidence of problem solving skills, craftsmanship, and the ability to articulate ideas both graphically and in writing. Students accepted into the pre-design program with an interest in graphic design are required to complete the College of Arts and Architecture CORE program, four interdisciplinary courses (A&A 101, 102S, 103, and 104) that students will take in their first year of study in any of the art and design disciplines. They will also be required to complete Introduction to Graphic Design (GD 100) and Introduction to Photography (PHOTO 100) in their first year. In their second year, they will be required to complete the Graphic Design Studio (GD 200), Typography (GD 201), and Photo Studio I (PHOTO 200). At the conclusion of the second year, students may make formal application for acceptance into the graphic design program. Acceptance into the Graphic Design major is determined by a portfolio review by faculty after the completion of A&A 101, A&A 102S, A&A 103, A&A 104, GD 100, GD 200, GD 201, PHOTO 100, and PHOTO 200 with grades of C or better in all of these courses. Typically, this review will take place in the fourth semester. Applicants who are not accepted into the major may re-apply the following year but must realize that this course of action will delay their graduation by at least one year. For the B.Des. degree in Graphic Design a minimum of 120 credits is required. |
